Society and History:
We foster a learning
environment to enable students to develop a positive vision for
themselves and the world in which they live.
Students
are taught to value diversity, act democratically and consider
the consequences of scientific and technological innovations in
their environment.
The Arts - Visual Arts/Drama:
Class teachers take responsibility for most aspects of this area
of the Arts.
Students participate in a variety of expressive activities as
part of their regular class program and
are encouraged to experiment
with a variety of media and share
their creative talents through display and performance.
Drama classes are available on a private
cost basis as arranged between parents and the tutor.
Forms outlining this service are
available from the school office.
The Arts - Music:
Goulburn Street School is very proud of the extensive
music program it offers students and classes participate
regularly in
music lessons taught by our specialist music teacher.
Year 3 to 6 students are also
encouraged to participate in choir, percussion and/or recorder
groups as well as being offered an
opportunity to audition for the woodwind section of the Combined
Primary Schools Band and the Department of Education
Combined
Primary Schools’ Choir.
Health and Wellbeing:
All students participate in Physical Education lessons
with a specialist Physical Education (PE) teacher.
Daily
PE also forms part of a regular fitness program for
students.
A PE uniform is not essential; however, shorts, polo tops and
t-shirts are available for sale from the office, although students
selected to represent the school at interschool events or
competitions are loaned sports tops.
Students participate in school and
interschool carnivals for swimming, athletics and cross country
as well as a variety of
sports clinics, and gymnastics
competitions.
Class
teachers as well as the P.E. teacher take responsibility for
general health and wellbeing programs. However a
Personal Relationships Program is
provided each year for all students in Years 3 – 6 as part of
their ongoing
Health and Wellbeing curriculum and
it is conducted by educators from Relationships Australia.

Information and Communications Technologies:
All students have access to computers as a
regular part of their learning program.
Early Childhood students are encouraged
to develop confidence using technology and older students build
on these skills by having
greater access to more sophisticated
computer programs, e-mail, and the internet.
Students in Year 3 – 6 are required to
sign a Computer Use Agreement which encourages them to fulfil
their obligations to use
computers in an appropriate manner.
Languages Other Than English (LOTE): Italian is taught by a specialist language
teacher from Years 2 to 6.
Flying Start & Extended Learning Programs:
Each year the school aims to offer two
additional learning programs
(Flying Start & Extended Learning)
depending on available staffing and resources.
These programs are designed to enhance the
student’s classroom learning. They are offered specifically to
students who would
benefit from additional support or are
capable of higher achievement.
Other Activities:
Throughout the year students participate in class excursions and
performances as well as other activities
such as Tournament of the Minds, Chess Club and Music
Eisteddfods etc., depending upon priorities, funding and whole
school programs.
REPORTING
We believe that reporting on student
achievement and progress is central to the relationship between
parents/carers and teachers.
During 2008 the following reporting
procedures will be available to Parents/Carers:
Ø Meet the Teachers -
at the beginning of the year teachers provide a special time for
them to share specific class information with Parent/Carers
This is usually combined with an informal social event.
Ø
Parent/Carer Teacher Discussion
are held mid year. During these discussions Parents/Carers and
teachers report on,
and share information, about students’ progress.
Ø
Written Reports
are issued twice per year. The mid year report informs
parents of student’s progress according to Australia-wide
standards
and includes detailed written comments on Literacy and Numeracy
and other agreed curriculum areas.
The second report, which is a summative report, is issued at the
conclusion of the school year and also includes the
Australia-wide standards.
Ø
Individual written summaries
of student progress are available on request by parent/carers at
other times throughout the year.
Ø
An Annual Collection
of student work samples and achievements is issued to all
families in December each year.
These collections support the information contained in written
reports and communicated with families at the Parent/Carer
Discussions throughout the year.
Ø
A Weekly Newsletter
provides incidental reporting and general information to families and is issued
every Wednesday, either electronically or
in hard copy.
Parents/carers are asked to read the newsletter carefully as it
contains information about school events.
