ENROLMENT INFORMATION

In Tasmania students spend 8 years at primary school, commencing in Kindergarten, then Preparatory, followed by Years 1 – 6. Kindergarten enrolments are accepted for children who have turned 4 years of age by the 1 January in their first year of enrolment (Department of Education policy).

Proof of date of birth and immunisation records are required on initial enrolment at the school.

                                                                               KINDERGARTEN

Class groups:

Kindergarten classes will have no more than 25 children and in some cases will be a combination of Kindergarten and Prep students. Kindergarten days are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.00am until 3.00pm. All kindergarten students attend school for a minimum of 10 hours per week.

What happens at Kindergarten?

At Kindergarten, children learn through play and participation in a range of activities planned by the teacher. They are encouraged to develop their communication skills through speaking and listening and interacting with other adults and children in a confident and positive way.

A significant part of the Kindergarten program involves children in a variety of experiences which support their learning through touching, feeling, tasting, hearing, exploring and experimenting. These activities include outdoor activities, music, construction, dressing up and role play, blocks and puzzles, collage, clay, play dough modelling, sand and water play, painting and drawing, as well as early reading, writing and number activities.

How can parents/carers become involved in Kindergarten?

The school encourages parent/carers to come along and help out at Kindergarten. Time spent in the classroom enables parents/carers to see how their children are progressing at school, as well as building a positive relationship between home and school life. Parent/carers will have an opportunity to assist in the classroom and are encouraged to do so, if possible.

What does my child need for Kindergarten?

A piece of fruit and a drink for morning tea.

A packed lunch and a drink (remember small fingers have difficulty with plastic wrap – boxes with lids and bottles with pop up tops are great).

A library bag for library days.

A clearly named approved sun hat.

A clearly named smock for the protection of clothing during messy activities – an old shirt with the arms cut to length provides ample protection.

Shoes – children need shoes with traction.  Velcro / zips and pull on boots area easier than lace ups.

Pre-Kindergarten - Parent / Child Sessions:

A Parent / Child Session is conducted at the Kindergarten for one afternoon per week especially for those children who are still too young to be enrolled at school, but will be attending Goulburn Street School in the future. For further information about Parent / Child Sessions, please contact the school office.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS / VALIDATION FORMS

A student validation form, which outlines emergency information and requirements, is sent home at the beginning of each school year. This form provides the school with contact information, in case of emergency. It is vitally important that the school be notified if these details change at any time during the school year.

Personal information is collected from you for the purpose of obtaining and verifying student related details. Your personal information will be used for the primary purpose for which it is collected. Personal information will be managed in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004. Please be assured that the school treats all information in confidence.

STUDENT ABSENCES

Parents are asked to notify the school if their child is absent or is going to be late for school. The Department of Education has a state-wide electronic reporting process for recording student absences, and all unexplained absences are required to be followed up.

Parents are reminded that school is compulsory for all students once they have turned 6 years of age and we suggest that family holidays be arranged during school holidays so that students’ educational programs are not disadvantaged.

LEVIES

Families are required to pay levies to assist with the cost of cultural activities, materials and equipment their children use as part of their ongoing education while enrolled at the school.

The Annual Levy assists with the purchase of art materials, library books, general stationery (including books, pencils and other classroom requisites), computer supplies, music and physical education equipment.

The Cultural Levy covers the cost of all excursions and visiting performances (except Water Safety and Camps).

Invoices will be issued at the beginning of the school year. Levies are payable at the beginning of every school year or on a term by term basis. The school accepts credit card payments.

School levies for 2008 are as follows:

 Kindergarten

$150.00          (Annual Levy - $95.00, Cultural Levy- $55.00)

Prep – Grade 6

$200.00          (Annual Levy - $145.00, Cultural Levy - $55.00)

Financial assistance:

The Government offers financial relief with the payment of school levies to those families on low incomes through the Student Assistance Scheme.  To qualify for this assistance an application form, which is available from the school office, needs to be completed and returned with enrolment forms. Families with children attending different schools need return only one  application per family.   Families who received STAS in 2007 will not need to complete an application form and will instead be contacted directly by letter to establish eligibility.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 2008

For 2008 the Student Assistance Scheme will be income tested according to your 2006-2007 financial year.  The following table may help you see if you are eligible.
